Wurth's Two-Out Double Lifts Dustdevils over Newman

LAREDO, Texas - Will Wurth delivered a two-out, bases loaded double over the left fielder's head in the sixth to give the Texas A&M International University baseball team a 5-3 win over Newman in game two of the series opening doubleheader. The Dustdevils dropped game one 2-1 with both Newman's runs going down as unearned, after a costly error in the fourth.

With the split the Dustdevils improve to 8-4 on the season with one game still to be played Saturday afternoon at 12 pm.

GAME ONE: TAMIU 1 - NEWMAN 2

Junior right-hander Manolo Mendoza dropped his first decision of the season in game one, giving up only two hits and allowing no earned runs through seven innings of work.

The Dustdevils took a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the third. With two away Jeff Anderson reached on a throwing error by Newman shortstop Jarrod Flax. Will Wurth and Austin Voros followed with back-to-back singles giving the Dustdevils their only run of the game.

In the fourth, Newman second baseman Terrell Brown led off with a routine fly ball to left that was dropped by TAMIU left fielder Ramon Sandoval allowing Brown to advance to second. David Longmore laid down a sac-bunt moving brown to third and the next batter Ruben Marrero took first after being hit by a pitch. Tyler Hancock singled into right field scoring Brown and moving Marrero to third. Corey Cowan gave Newman a 2-1 lead pushing Marrero across on a sac-fly into left field.

The Dustdevils never seriously threatened again in game one, picking up only two more hits the rest of the way. Kyle Burkhardt improved to 2-2 on the season for Newman, going 6.1 innings striking out six and giving up no earned runs.

GAME TWO: TAMIU 5 - NEWMAN 3

The Jets took a 1-0 lead in the top half of the top frame on a TAMIU error. With one away, TAMIU pitcher Danny Alejandro gave up back-to-back walks to Terrell Brown and David Longmore. Dustdevils third baseman Alex Salas couldn't handle a grounder from Newman clean-up hitter Ruben Marrero, allowing the speedy Brown to score from second.

The Dustdevils evened the game at one, picking up a run in the third. Sean Smedley led things off with a double and was moved over to second on a sac-bunt from Jaron Shimmel. Two batters later, Will Wurth plated Smedley with a two-out single to center field.

The two teams each picked up a run in the fourth and the Jets added one in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead.

In the sixth, the Dustdevils came through with three two-out hits scoring three runs to take the lead for good. Sean Smedley and Jaron Shimmel got the rally going with consecutive singles, followed by a walk by Jeff Anderson to load up the bases. Will Wurth stepped up and cleared the bases with a line drive that sailed over the right fielder's head, giving TAMIU a 5-3 lead. Danny Navarro did an outstanding job of closing the game out, allowing only one hit and striking out three over the final three innings. Navarro improved to 3-0 on the season with the win, giving up two hits and allowing no runs in 4.1 innings.

Wurth paced the Dustdevils at the plate in the doubleheader going 4-6 with a double and three RBI.

Jaron Shimmel was 3-5 on the day with a triple and an RBI. Sean Smedley went 2-5 with a double and two runs.
