Newman defeated Texas A&M International University 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at Jorge Haynes Field on the TAMIU campus. The series finale win propels the Jets to a 2-1 series win over the Dustdevils.
Newman (8-5, 7-5 Heartland) starter Jacob Furr kept TAMIU (8-5, 7-5) off balance through six shutout innings, allowing three singles and only two runners to reach scoring position. The Jet offensive scored single runs in the second and fifth innings before Corey Cowan pushed his team to a 4-0 lead with a two-RBI double to left field in the seventh inning.
TAMIU cut the lead to 4-1 on a sacrifice fly by Austin Voros in the eighth inning but that's as close as the Dustdevils would get. The home team would place runners on first and third with one out in the ninth inning but the threat ended on consecutive strikeouts by Sean Smedley and Jaron Shimmel.
Jerry Hawkins (1-1) took the loss for the Dustdevils after allowing two runs on four hits with four strikeouts and four walks in a 5.0 inning outing.
The Dustdevils will now face a week of non-conference competition against Lone Star Conference opponents. After playing Angelo State in doubleheader action on Tuesday at Incarnate Word TAMIU will host UIW in a three-game series next weekend at Jorge Haynes Field.
