Dustdevils Close Strong at Best Western Premiere Spring Fling

DENTON, Texas - The Texas A&M International University softball team rebounded after dropping two straight on Saturday, winning their final two games at the Best Western Premiere Spring Fling on Sunday in Denton.

The Dustdevils topped Emporia State 6-0 in game one before taking down Washburn 9-3.

GAME ONE: TAMIU 6 - EMPORIA STATE 0

In the opening game, freshman Sarah Johnson tossed a gem going all seven innings allowing only six hits and picking up two strikeouts. Regina Morales was 2-3 with a homerun and 2 RBI while Kristen LaBuhn also went 2-3 with a solo homerun.

The Dustdevils took a 2-0 lead in the top half of the first. Alexis Gonzalez reached on an error by Hornets right fielder Stephanie Goodwin and was plated by Regina Morales who ripped a two run homer over the left field wall.

The Dustdevils took advantage of another Emporia State error in the second to extend their lead to 3-0. With two away Rochelle Nash stole second and Nikki Salazar came across on a misplaced throw by Hornets catcher Amanda Self.

Another error by the Hornets in the fourth allowed the Dustdevils to put two more runs on the board. With two away Esme Gonzalez and Rochelle Nash connected for back to back singles and Alexis Gonzalez reached on an error by Emporia State second baseman Bradie Schmelzer, which allowed Esme Gonzalez to score. Two batters later, Sam Carrillo drew a bases loaded walk which scored Rochelle Nash.

The Dustdevils picked up their final run in the fifth off a solo homerun from sophomore Kristen LaBuhn.

GAME TWO: TAMIU 9 - Washburn 3

In the late game the TAMIU bats came to live as the Dustdevils hammered out 14 hits. Rochelle Nash led the way at the plate going 4-4 with three RBI. Emily Smith was 2-3 with a homerun and two RBI and Alexis Gonzalez was 2-4 with two RBI. Sam Carrillo was 2-3 with a run scored, Olivia Garcia was 2-2 with a run scored and Esme Gonzalez was 1-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Kyndall Reaves went the distance on the mound giving up seven hits and allowing only one earned run.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first, the Dustdevils answered with three runs in the second. With two away, Esme Gonzalez singled through the left side plating Kristen LaBuhn. The next batter Nash singled to right center pushing two more runs across and giving the Dustdevils a 3-2 lead.

Emily Smith made it a 5-2 game in the third, belting a two run homer over the left field wall.

The Dustdevils added another run in the fourth and three more in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
