Final Stats
UT-Permian Basin shutout Texas A&M International University 4-0 on Saturday afternoon at Jorge Haynes field on the TAMIU campus. The result allows the Falcons to salvage a win in the season-opening series between the Heartland Conference rivals.
Travis Wilcox turned in a masterful pitching performance for the Falcons, scattering three hits with seven strikeouts and only two walks in a 7.0 inning outing.
UTPB (1-2) got all of the offense it would need with a two-run RBI double by Hugo Hernandez in the second inning. TAMIU (2-1) struggled defensively in the loss with five Dustdevil errors resulting in the Falcons scoring all four of their runs unearned.
Danny Alejandro (0-1) took the loss for TAMIU. He allowed three runs (none earned) on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks in 3.1 innings of work.
The game started promising enough for the Dustdevils, with Jeff Anderson reaching base on a wild pitch on a strikeout and Will Wurth reaching on a fielding error by Wilcox on an attempted sac bunt. TAMIU would load the bases with one out but the threat ended on a ground out by Mick Daniels and a fly out by Austin Voros.
TAMIU would get four more runners in scoring position the rest of the game, with two of them reaching third base, but the Dusdevils couldn't punch any runs across against Wilcox.
TAMIU will remain at home to play Oklahoma Panhandle State in a three-game Heartland Conference series next weekend. The Dustdevils and Aggies will play a doubleheader on Friday and a single game on Saturday.
