Final Stats
AUSTIN - With two down in the bottom of the eighth, Senior Sam Carrillo ripped a double down the left field line plating Regina Morales as the Dustdevils rallied to top St. Edward's 2-1 in game two of TAMIU's conference opening doubleheader.
The Hilltoppers used a four-run inning in the fifth and a six run inning in the sixth to take game one from the TAMIU 10-5.
The Dustdevils are only 9-25 on the season, but 1-1 in conference play as TAMIU looks for a return trip to the Heartland Conference Tournament. The Dustdevils and the Hilltoppers will conclude their series Saturday afternoon playing game three at 1:00 p.m. at Diane Daniels Field.
GAME ONE: TAMIU 5 - St. Edward's 10
The Dustdevils came out of the gates ready to play, scoring four runs over the first two innings to grab a 4-0 lead. In the top of the first, Sam Carrillo drew a bases loaded walk and Mariena Gallardo delivered a two-RBI single to give TAMIU the early lead. Regina Morales made it a 4-0, plating Kristen LaBuhn with a two-out single in the second.
St. Edward's finally got to TAMIU starting pitcher Kyndall Reaves in the fifth, after Reaves had held the Hilltoppers scoreless through the first four innings. The Hilltoppers strung together three hits to the game at four, before they added six in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Emily Smith came through with an RBI ground out in the seventh, but that's as close as TAMIU would come falling 10-5.
Alexis Gonzalez led the Dustdevils at the plate finishing 3-4 with two runs, while Mariena Gallardo finished 2-3 with two RBI.
Kyndall Reaves dropped to 3-9 with the loss, giving up four runs on seven hits with four walks and a strikeout through 5.0 innings. Monica Cavazos and Mariena Gallardo combined to close out the game for TAMIU, allowing six runs on five hits.
GAME TWO: TAMIU 2 - St. Edward's 1
Sarah Johnson put on an outstanding performance and had just enough help from her offense as the Dustdevils took game two 2-1.
Johnson went all eight innings for TAMIU, giving up only one run on four hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
The Hilltoppers took the first lead of the game in the fourth when Miranda Yeager scored on a wild pitch, but the Dustdevils quickly evened the game up answering in the fifth. Esme Gonzalez led off with single and was able to come across on a throwing error off a bunt laid down by Kristen LaBuhn.
The game remained knotted at one until the eighth when Carrillo delivered the game winning RBI. Regina Morales got the rally going with a two-out single and advanced to second on an Emily Smith single. Carrillo stepped up and roped one down the line to score Morales and Johnson was able to get the Hilltoppers to go 1-2-3 in the bottom half of the eighth to seal the win.
