Final Stats

LAREDO - The Texas A&M International University baseball team slipped to 7-10 in conference play, losing both games of a doubleheader to St. Edward's 10-0 and 8-5 Friday afternoon at Jorge Haynes Field.

The Dustdevils overall record drops to 13-13 on the season, as TAMIU and St. Edward's prepare for the final game of the series Saturday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. at Jorge Haynes Field.

GAME ONE: TAMIU 0 - St. Edward's 10

The Dustdevils struggled at the plate in the opening game, managing only one hit versus St. Edward's pitcher Tyler Harris in the 10-0 loss. Austin Voros had TAMIU's lone hit, beating out a throw on a high chopper to third base.

Meanwhile, the Hilltoppers scattered 13 hits and took advantage of three TAMIU errors to hand Manolo Mendoza his third loss of the season. Mendoza started the game strong, holding the Hilltoppers scoreless through the first two innings before giving up a run in the third and two more in the fourth. The big TAMIU righty fell to 1-3 on the season going 3.1 innings, allowing three hits and three walks.

Marty Bigham didn't fare much better in relief allowing St. Edward's to score four runs on six hits through 2.2 innings. Ryan Maldonado closed out the game for the Dustdevils allowing three runs on four hits in one inning.

GAME TWO: TAMIU 5 - St. Edward's 8

Trailing 6-2 heading into the seventh, the Dustdevils scored three unanswered over the next two frames to pull within one run, before the Hilltoppers answered with two in the top of the ninth to put the game away.

St. Edward's put the Dustdevils in an early hole scoring four runs in the top half of the first, before Will Wurth scored on a wild pitch in the bottom half to give TAMIU its first run of the game. Dustdevils catcher Grant Garrett made it a two run game in the fourth, scoring Matt Arruda on a two out double down the left field line, but once again St. Edward's responded plating two in the fifth.

The Dustdevils would finally start to build some momentum late in the game, scoring three runs in the seventh and eighth. Ramon Sandoval led off the seventh with a base hit and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Will Wurth moved Sandoval to third on a ground out to first base, before he came across on a wild pitch to make it 6-3.

In the eighth, Korey Gosselin led off with a single and advanced to second after Matt Arruda drew a walk. The Hilltoppers brought in their hard-throwing right hander Stepehn Johnson, who was routinely clocked over 95 MPH, to try and slow down the Dustdevils momentum, but the TAMIU batters were able to hold their own. After Jaron Shimmel drew a walk, Jeff Anderson plated Gosselin on a fielder's choice and Ramon Sandoval hit an RBI single to make it a 6-5 game.

With two on in the top half of the ninth, Chris Villa came into the game and gave up a one out double putting the game out of reach.

Danny Alejandro took the loss for TAMIU (0-4) giving up six runs on six hits with three strikeouts through 4.1 innings of work. Danny Navarro allowed two runs on five hits with one strikeout through 4.0 innings.

In game two, Ramon Sandoval finished 2-3 at the plate with a run scored, while Austin Voros and Grant Garrett each finished 2-4.
