GAME THREE: TAMIU 4, St. Edward's 6
TAMIU's game-three loss mirrored their loss in game two as St. Edward's jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, only to have the Dustdevils narrow the gap to one run before the Hilltoppers put the game away with a run in the ninth.
St. Edward's jumped on TAMIU starting pitcher Jerry Hawkins, scoring a run in each of the first three innings and another in the fifth. With two-away in the top half of the first, Adam Shank and Wes Koenig came up with back-to-back doubles to give the Hilltoppers a 1-0 lead.
In the second, Colin Elmore led off with a single and advanced to second when Rylan Patel was hit by an inside fastball. Beau Rogers tried to move the runners over, but Hawkins made a heads up play getting the lead runner at third. After Johnson flied out, Harris singled to left field plating Patel to make it a 2-0 game.
Koenig singled, Marshall Burford walked and Ransom Lalonde beat out a throw to first on a sacrifice bunt to start the third, loading up the bases with no outs. Hawkins got Elmore to ground into a 4-6-3 double play, but Koenig came across extending the lead to 3-0.
Burford started out the fifth with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Lalonde. Elmore followed with a bunt single to third base and two batters later Beau Rogers singled up the middle to make it a 4-0 game.
In the bottom half of the fifth, Voros trimmed the lead to 4-2 belting his second double of the day. After Jeff Anderson drew a one-out walk, Jeremy Olivo reached on a fielder's choice while Anderson was thrown out at second. Wurth singled up the middle putting runners on first and second before Voros narrowly missed a home run to left field scoring Olivo and Wurth.
St. Edward's added to their lead in the seventh, with a two-out rally off TAMIU reliever Ryan Williams. Rogers, McCaleb and Harris connected on consecutive base hits, making it a 5-2 game.
TAMIU was able to answer in the bottom half of the seventh on Voros final double of the day. Anderson led off with a double off the left field wall before Wurth reached on an error by the Hilltoppers second baseman, putting runners at the corners. With the wind gusting towards left field, Voros sent a shot over the left fielders head scoring Anderson and Wurth to trim the lead to 5-4.
The Hilltoppers got an insurance run in the ninth to put the game out of reach. AJ Hermanson was hit by a pitch with one away and advanced to second on a stolen base. Rogers put runners at the corners with a single up the middle before the Dustdevils switched to closer Chris Villa. McCaleb laid down a well placed bunt and the Hilltoppers ran a perfectly executed squeeze play to take a 6-4 lead.
The Hilltoppers brought in hard-throwing Stephen Johnson in the bottom half of the ninth and Johnson got the Dustdevils to go 1-2-3 to end the game.
Jerry Hawkins was saddled with the loss for TAMIU, falling to 1-4 on the season. Hawkins went 5.0 innings giving up four earned runs on 12 hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
