Dustdevils Sweep Doubleheader versus Newman

LAREDO - It was a tale of two games Friday afternoon at Dustdevil field as the Texas A&M International University softball team earned back to back wins over Newman University 4-3 and 10-1. In the opening game the Dustdevils were able to overcome a season high eight errors to get the win in extra innings, while in game two the Dustdevils offense put on an impressive display, run-ruling the Jets in five innings.

The Dustdevils improve to 3-2 in conference play and will look for the series sweep Saturday afternoon as they host the Jets in the final game of the series at 12 p.m. The audio broadcast for the game can be heard at this web address: http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/tamiu.portal#

GAME ONE: TAMIU 4, Newman 3 F/8

In the early game, the Dustdevils were held scoreless through the first six innings and committed eight errors to spot the Jets a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the seventh the Dustdevils offense finally broke through against Newman starting pitcher Sarah Fipps, scoring three runs on five hits - four with two outs - to send the game into extra innings.

Kristen LaBuhn led off the bottom of the eighth with a single to center and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Alexis Gonzalez. Two batters later Regina Morales drew a walk and both runners were able to advance on a passed ball. With two away Emily Smith sent a sharp grounder to Newman shortstop Sarah Harshberger, who committed the Jets only error of the game, allowing Kristen LaBuhn to score the game winning run.

Kyndall Reaves put on one of her best performances of the season picking up the complete game win, giving up no earned runs with three strikeouts and no walks.

GAME TWO: TAMIU 10, Newman 1 F/5

In the late game, the Dustdevils flexed their offensive muscles knocking off the Jets via the mercy rule in five innings. The TAMIU offense combined to go 14-26 at the plate with six doubles and a homerun.

Sam Carrillo was 2-3 with a solo homer and three RBI for the Dustdevils, while Regina Morales and Emily Smith had three hits apiece. Mariena Gallardo and Desiree Ramos each went 2-3 and Alexis Gonzalez was 2-2 with two runs scored. Gallardo picked up her second win of the season giving up only one run on three hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

Morales doubled in the bottom of the first plating Nash and Gonzalez to give the Dustdevils a 2-0 lead. Emily Smith followed with an RBI double scoring Morales and Gallardo singled to score pinch runner Amy Aguillon to give TAMIU a 4-0 advantage.

Gonzalez doubled in the second and advanced to third on an error by the Newman first baseman. Morales picked up her second RBI of the game, plating Gonzalez on a single to left field to make it 5-0.

Newman scored their only run of the game in the top half of the third, but the Dustdevils answered with two more in the bottom half. Gallardo and Desiree Ramos led off with back to back doubles, extending the lead to 6-1. Pinch runner Desiree Ortiz advanced to third on a sac-fly from Nikki Salazar and scored on sac-fly from Kristen LaBuhn to make it 7-1.

Morales tagged her second double of the game to lead off the fourth and moved to third on a single by Emily Smith. Pinch hitter Sam Carrillo gave TAMIU a 10-1 lead, launching a three-run homer over the left field wall for her first homerun of the season.
