LAREDO - Sophomore Kristen LaBuhn went 3-3 at the plate driving home the Dustdevils' only run of the game, helping the Texas A&M International University softball team complete a three-game sweep over Newman University with a 1-0 win Saturday afternoon at Dustdevil field.
LaBuhn was aided by pitcher Sarah Johnson who picked up the complete-game shutout win, allowing only four hits with five strikeouts and one walk. With the win the freshman improved her record to 6-6 on the season, while dropping her ERA to 3.64.
Johnson faced some trouble in the fourth with runners at the corners and two away, but she was able to work out of the jam getting Sarah Balderas to pop out to the catcher.
The two teams were locked at zero for the majority of the game and it wasn't until the bottom of the fifth when TAMIU finally broke through.
Desiree Ramos led off with a single to right field and Head Coach Scott Libby quickly brought in the speedy Desiree Ortiz to pinch-run. Nikki Salazar advanced Ortiz to second on a sacrifice bunt and two batters later LaBuhn roped a double into right center plating Ortiz.
The Dustdevils improve to 4-2 in conference play with the win and 12-26 overall. TAMIU will return to action Tuesday, March 27 with a home doubleheader versus Incarnate Word. First pitch for Tuesday's game is set for 2 p.m. with game two slated for a 4:30 start.
