Dustdevils Go Blow For Blow With LCU

TAMIU faces competitive skirmish vs. Lady Chaps

Box Score LAREDO, Texas -- The Texas A&M International volleyball team lost its third consecutive home game in straight sets on Thursday to Lubbock Christian. The Dustdevils took LCU into the “win by two” range on two separate occasions but lost 25-23, 26-24, 28-26.

The loss drops TAMIU to 2-16 on the season with a 1-9 record in league play. In 18 games, they have yet to reach a fifth set, losing in four sets eight times and being swept on 10 occasions. Of their two wins, both came in sweeps.

“It’s frustrating,” said Dustdevils head coach Marlon Sano, whose team posted a winning record last year for the first time since 2006. “We didn’t error very much but we errored at the wrong time. We had five or six chances in the first set to break it open and we didn’t.

“I honestly thought we got hurt by our linespeople. I thought there were some missed calls, but when you put yourself in that position then tough luck.”

In the first matchup of the season, Lubbock Christian (11-7, 8-2 Heartland) played its debut game in the Heartland Conference in a 3-0 sweep over the Dustdevils. While they swept the sets, each was close as the Lady Chaps won 25-22, 25-23, 25-20.

It was more of the same on Thursday as TAMIU lost by a combined six points in all three sets. The Dustdevils were tied at 23 in the first set, tied at 24 in the second set and tied at 26 in the third set, yet lost all three.

“It’s like we are not grasping, feeling and understanding momentum and what it takes to keep momentum on our side,” Sano said. “We let them off the hook and you just can’t do that. At the same time you just can’t afford to make mistakes.

“The tough thing this season is every single error has been magnified but that’s just the reality of where we are at. One thing just completely swings the momentum.”
