ALAMOSA, Colo. – It took 10 extra minutes to see if Texas A&M International could secure its first win of the season, but it was Adams State (3-0) that squeezed the overtime victory instead. With the 2-1 loss, the Dustdevils fall to 0-5.
It was a 100th minute cross from Samantha Marcolina to game-winning goal-scorer Allie Mercado that sealed the Dustdevils’ defeat. It was Mercado’s second goal of the campaign.
After trailing most of the first half – from the 9th minute – because of a Kristine Hackett finish, the Dustdevils scored their first goal of the 2013 campaign when Laura Twinem buried a Paige Johnson service in the 43rd minute. The junior defender out of Ontario, Canada, equalized the match for her first strike since scoring three goals as a sophomore.
The level score stood throughout the match’s second 45 minutes, forcing the Dustdevils’ first sudden-death overtime. The second half wasn’t scoreless because of a lack of attack, however. TAMIU let 11 shots fly, with six falling on frame in the game; ASU triggered 14 shots, with only five on goal.
Despite the lack of the center official’s bookings, the teams totaled 28 fouls in the 100-minute match.
TAMIU will now return to Texas to face the University of Texas at Brownsville on Sept. 23 at 3 p.m. before its home-opening Heartland Conference showdown with St. Mary’s on Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m.
