Dustdevils Tip Off Season With Doubleheader

TAMIU takes on California-based teams at Seaside Invitational

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The Texas A&M volleyball team opened its season in a beautiful USA-Mexico border town on Friday. It wasn't Laredo, but instead was at the Seaside Invitational in San Diego, Calif. The Dustdevils opened with an 11 a.m. match against Azusa Pacific and closed the day with a 7 p.m. match against California State-Dominguez Hills.

The Dustdevils began the day well, winning the first game it played, 25-23, against Azusa Pacific, but the Dustdevils dropped its next six games – three to Azusa Pacific and three against Dominguez Hills in a sweep.

On Saturday, the Dustdevils will close its action at the Seaside Invitational, hosted by Point Loma, with matches against Cal State-Stanislaus at 5 p.m. and against Point Loma at 9 p.m.

TAMIU will open its home schedule on Sept. 19 against Heartland Conference rival St. Edward's after opening the regular season with nine consecutive road matches.

Azusa Pacific 3, TAMIIU 1

(23-25, 25-9, 25-14, 25-15)

In the season- and tournament-opening match, TAMIU registered 15 kills and a barraging 50 total attacks in its only victory of the day.

Toriana Goods piled up 10 kills in the match off 49 total attacks to lead the Dustdevils. She also recovered a team second-best 11 digs – tied with Alexander High product Lizzie Prieto.

Desiree Ortiz pounded out a team-high 25 digs. Alex Ciszek assaulted Azusa Pacific with 42 total attacks.

TAMIU finished its first match with nine service aces, 68 digs, 37 kills, 145 total attacks. They posted a slim 0.97 hitting percentage to fall to 0-1 in the young season.

Cal State-Dominguez Hills 3, TAMIU 0

(25-17, 32-30, 25-20)

The Dustdevils second match of the day was a clean sweep in the scorebook, but featured a firecracker of a second game.

After falling behind one game to none, TAMIU blasted a season-high 18 kills and 51 total attacks after forcing a blow-for-blow slobberknocker from a 19-all knotting. The teams traded points, swinging back and forth, until Dominguez Hills scored three consecutive points to win the match.

Ciszek led the Dustdevils with 12 kills and a team second-most 30 total attacks. She landed eight digs and 12 points in the match.

Goods fired a team-high 37 total attacks, with team captain Miranda Pratt placing a third-best 20 attacks.

Prieto boasted a healthy .429 hitting percentage to lead the Dustdevils, while also racking up a team-high 30 assists, six digs and four points.

Ortiz led the Dustdevils with 18 digs, while TAMIU scored 37 kills off 117 total attacks in the match.
