LAREDO, Texas – Defending Heartland Conference co-champion Texas A&M International University played host to Lubbock Christian on Saturday at the TAMIU Soccer Complex, dominating every statistical facet of play. Despite their nearly 3-to-1 shots ratio, the red-card ravaged 8-man Dustdevils fell, 3-2, in double overtime.
TAMIU (5-5-1, 1-2 Heartland) fell into an early 2-0 deficit just four minutes before halftime, but Michael Iskander's second goal of the season sliced the Chaps' advantage in half. His well-timed run trailed a saved shot by Aaron Zuniga, freeing Iskander for the open-net burial from just beyond the 6-yard box.
Nearly 25 minutes later, with the Dustdevils already reduced a man, late substitute Eduardo "Wayo" Gonzalez singed the sideline and rammed another rebound off the LCU goalkeeper's failed save into the net. The equalizer was Gonzalez's first goal of the season and it lifted the nearly 300 supporters into a frenzy.
The Dustdevils launched 32 shots to force LCU into seven saves despite two more red cards. All in all, the official raised 18 cards from his pocket – ejecting three Dustdevils and a Chap.
The match was settled off a golden goal in the 103rd minute.
TAMIU now face a seven-game stretch with six matches at home, starting with the University of Texas of the Permian Basin on Oct. 13 at 2:30 p.m.
