LAREDO, Texas - On Saturday afternoon, the St. Edward's Hilltoppers defeated the Texas A&M International University Dustdevils, 3-1 (24-26, 25-15, 25-9, 25-21).
The Dustdevils started strong in the first match, beating the Hilltopper's .170 attack percentage. In the first set, the Dustdevils totaled 12 kills. The team then rallied, scoring seven unanswered points to win 26-24.
Junior Miaje Hubbard led the Dustdevils with 13 kills and a .098 attack percentage. Behind her were junior Tasmin Apple and senior Alex Ciszek, each recording eight kills. Sophomore Samantha Gonzalez recorded three, while junior Lizzie Preito recorded one. Prieto led the team with 30 assists.
Sophomore Koral Wright led the team in aces, with three. Prieto recorded two, while Ciszek added one to the stack.
Defensively, Prieto and Gonzalez led the team in blocks. Gonzalez recorded two, while Preito recorded one solo block and one block assist.
Senior Sophia Quinones led the team with 29 digs. Right behind her were Ciszek and freshman Alejandra Bustamante, with 15 and 14, respectively. Wright added seven to the stack, along with Prieto adding five.
Next up, TAMIU faces non-Heartland Conference team Huston-Tillotson in Austin on Tuesday. It returns to Laredo next week to host Heartland Conference rival St. Mary's on Thursday at the TAMIU KCB.
