Dustdevils Down OC to Clinch Heartland Berth

TAMIU scores postseason berth with home victory

LAREDO, Texas – On Monday afternoon at the Texas A&M International Soccer Complex, a quartet of Dustdevils helped push TAMIU (6-5-1, 4-2-0 Heartland) past the Oklahoma Christian Eagles (0-13-1, 0-4-0 Heartland), 4-1, to clinch a playoff spot in the Heartland Conference tournament for just the second time in program history.

With the victory, the Dustdevils earned at least the No. 4 seed via a head-to-head tiebreaker over Newman. The Dustdevils edged the Jets, 1-0, in overtime on Oct. 4 in the pair's only meeting this season. The Dustdevils are currently tied with St. Mary's (4-2-0 Heartland, 8-6-0) for the No. 3 seed with only St. Edward's (4-0-0 Heartland, 8-4-0) and Dallas Baptist (3-1-0, 9-3-0) ahead of them. Only the top four full NCAA Division II members qualify for the conference tournament.

On Monday, TAMIU senior Sol Medina led the Dustdevils with two goals and an assist. Medina was the first Dustdevil to put numbers up on the board in the 24th minute. She received a pass from the left by junior Karina Garcia, putting the ball into the net from eight yards. Medina claimed her second goal and Karina Garcia notched her second assist of the day in the 74th minute, when the two corresponded again to record the fourth unanswered goal. Karina Garica leads the team this season with five assists.

In addition to Medina's two goals, she also assisted junior Jessica Parker's goal in the 36th minute. Medina passed the ball ahead from 35 yards, and Paker nailed it into the goal for her second of the season. Junior Kim Garica also put the Dustdevils on the board with a penalty kick in the 29th minute. Kim Garcia leads the team with penalty kicks and goals, going two-for-two with eight goals on the season.

In the 90th minute the Eagles showed some enthusiasm with a goal off of a throw-in deflection, but with 30 seconds on the clock, it wasn't enough to compete with TAMIU.

The Dustdevils will have a week off and will come back to battle with St. Mary's on October 27th at the TAMIU Soccer Complex at 5:00 p.m. on senior night.
