LAREDO, Texas – The regular season's finale pitted Texas A&M International University against its Interstate-35 rival St. Edward's in Austin – just four days before both face a rematch in the first-ever Heartland Conference tournament, also in Austin. The top-seeded Hilltoppers defeated the No. 4 Dustdevils, 6-1.
The Dustdevils fell victim to a pair of opening goals spread just 38 seconds apart. The host Hilltoppers added their third strike eight minutes later and their fourth came one second before the intermission. The final two tallies came between the 48th and 54th minutes.
The Dustdevils stole a goal back in the 74th minute when senior striker Eduardo Serrano scored his second strike of the season. Fellow senior and team captain Jovany Macias curled a cross from the right side, connecting with the netward nodding Serrano.
Serrano and Macias were the only Dustdevils with shots on goal.
The Dustdevils enter the first conference tournament as the No. 4 seed with a rematch with St. Edward's on Friday at 2:30 p.m. The winner of that affair advances to face the winner of No. 2 Newman and No. 3 St. Mary's on Sunday at noon.
