SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Three days after staging a historic draw against a NCAA Division I program to open the season, Texas A&M International faced Ouachita Baptist in a neutral-site slugfest on the campus of St. Mary's in San Antonio. The Dustdevils recorded their first victory of the year, a 2-1 result, to stay unbeaten on Friday.
Karina Garcia opened the scoring in the 10th minute before the Tigers' Abby Emmanuel equalized in the 52nd minute; Jessica Parker clinched the game-winning goal in the 65th minute.
The Dustdevils (1-0-1, 0-0-0 Heartland) have yet to lose a match after opening the season with a program-first draw against a Division I opponent – the University of Texas-Pan American – on Sept. 2.
TAMIU took the Tigers backline and goalkeeper Emily Keith to task, assaulting OBU with 26 shots – 15 on target. Parker led the offensive with 10 attempts and seven on frame. Senior midfielder Sol Medina put one of her three shots on target while both Karina Garcia and Kim Garcia tried twice with accuracy. Substitutes Chelsea Connor and Alexandra Rojas-Ayala each took two shots with one apiece falling on frame.
Rebecca Bell put one of her five shots on frame, but it was her assisting pass to Parker that cemented her impact in the match.
TAMIU goalkeeper Chelsea Knaack saw little action, making only two saves off just three OBU shots on goal. OBU's Kieth was forced into 11 saves off Dustdevils shots.
The unbeaten Dustdevils will now return to the TAMIU Soccer Complex to host the University of Texas at Brownsville on Sunday at 7 p.m.
