LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International hosted its second consecutive Heartland Conference match to open the season on Saturday at the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building, falling to Lubbock Christian, 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-17).
Junior newcomer Miaje Hubbard paced the Dustdevils (0-2, 0-2 Heartland) with 11 kills.
Another newcomer, freshman Amanda Wesner, filled in for the injured Lizzie Prieto. Wesner recorded 27 assists, six digs, and an ace.
"I think Amanda did a good job considering it being a spur of the moment," TAMIU coach Marlon Sano said.
The Dustdevils had trouble with Lubbock Christian's .266 attack percentage (.138 TAMIU), although Tasmin Apple and Alex Ciszek led the team, both clocking .222 attack percentages.
"I think Lubbock Christian is a very good squad and very consistent with what they do," Sano said. "As a team, we did not play very consistently.
"As a team, we still have room for growth. As of right now, we are good in almost all areas, (but) we just need to clean some things up here and there."
Over the next week TAMIU faces conference opponent St. Mary's University (1-2, 1-1 Heartland) on Wednesday in San Antonio before heading into the East Central/Southeast Oklahoma Tournament. TAMIU will play four games in two days against Missouri Southern State, New Mexico Highlands, East Central University, and Washburn University.
"We are in pretty good shape physically, but we will certainly be tested (next week)," Sano said.
