LAREDO, Texas (November 18, 2015) -- The Texas A&M International Women's Basketball team was handed a single-point loss (66-67) from Texas A&M Kingsville in their home opener on Thursday night. The loss puts the Dustdevils' 2015-16 campaign at 0-3 overall. The Lone Star Conference rival Javelinas have contributed for two of the Dustdevils three losses this season.
An early lead by the Javelinas in the first quarter left the Dustdevils trailing by ten points as they entered the next ten minutes of play. TAMIU would lead the second quarter by 4 points total, resulting in the decrease of the Javelinas' overall lead to 6 at the half (31-37). In the third, TAMUK doubled TAMIU's efforts, when the Javelinas outscored the Dustdevils with 15 points against seven. The Javelinas would lead TAMIU going into the fourth quarter by 14 (38-52).
The Dustdevils rallied in the fourth quarter to generate the most points in all quarters of play by either team with a total of 28. With seconds left, TAMIU was awarded two free throws to tie the game after a TAMUK foul. After netting both points, a foul against TAMIU in the dying seconds of play resulted in two attempts at the line for TAMUK. The Javelinas secured one, which was enough to hold their victory as the clock expired.
The Dustdevils Senior core made an impact at the line for TAMIU, with
Keiona Mathews (5-5) and
Jessica Prieto (4-4) racking up a perfect 100% in free throws.
Mathews also led the Dustdevils in offensive rebounds (7) to assist in the comeback effort.
Up next, the Dustdevils will rematch another Lone Star Conference rival by hosting Tarleton State on Tuesday, November 24th at 5:30pm in the TAMIU KCB. The Dustdevils will look to earn their first win, while splitting their season appearances with the TexAnns.
