Dustdevils hold Javelinas scoreless in third quarter to capture 45-39 victory

LAREDO, Texas (December 12, 2015) -- The Dustdevils dropped the Texas A&M Kingsville Javelinas with a dominating second half performance on Saturday night in Kinsgville. The 45-39 victory over TAMUK closes out the three competitions played against the Javelinas during the 2015-16 season.

TAMIU trailed the Javelinas in the first and second quarters, sending the Dustdevils into halftime with a 6-point deficit. The Dustdevils shot 26.9% in the first half, versus TAMUK's 34.6%.

In the third quarter, the Dustdevils held TAMUK completely scoreless for all ten minutes. Keeping the Javelinas in a drought, the Dustdevils captilized with a 8 point run to take the lead.

During the fourth quarter, TAMIU held their lead until the final buzzer, out-scoring the Javelinas by four (16-12).

Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson praised the efforts of her team by saying, "It was a good road win! Our defense won the game for us in the second half. I was very pleased to see the progress with our defense and we need to continue to improve in this area."

Senior Keiona Mathews continued to lead the Dustdevils with a dominant 17-point, 12-rebound performance. Close behind her came Senior Jessica Prieto, tallying 11 points and 6 total rebounds.

Coach Bento-Jackson is now motivating her team to look to their conference schedule that lies ahead. "This concludes our non conference schedule," she said. "We need to clean some things up, build off of this, and prepare for the Heartland Conference."

Up next, the Dustdevils will start the beginning of this season's conference play. First up will be Lubbock Christian on Thursday, December 17. Tip off is at 5:30pm at the United High School gymnasium.
