LAREDO, Texas (December 19, 2015) -- Senior Guard
Keiona Mathews starred for the Texas A&M International Women's Basketball team on Saturday afternoon by shattering the Individual Points Scored in a Single Game record with 37. The Dustdevils took a 73-58 win against Oklahoma Panhandle State, moving them on to 1-1 in Heartland Conference play, and 4-6 overall.
Mathews 37-point night broke the previous individual points in a single game record of 36, which dated back to January 2004. The previous record was held by Jermina Tomlinson in a game against Texas - Permian Basin. Mathews contributed 14 two-point baskets, 5 shots netted from beyond the arc, and 4 attempts from the line. She also collected 11 boards, 3 assists and 2 steals.
TAMIU capitalized on a 21-point second quarter to set the tone for their win. In the second ten minutes of play, the Dustdevils outscored the Aggies 21-11, which allowed them to generate their lead that was held unti the final buzzer. The Dustdevils captured the lead that they did not return at the 8:43 minute mark in the second quarter, courtesy of a 3-ball from Senior Guard
Jessica Prieto.
Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson commented on the win by saying, "It was definitely good to get this win. We were a little up and down throughout the game and need to manage the game much better at the end, but it is a conference win and everyone can go home for Christmas with a smile. Keke had an unbelievable individual performance and is doing a much better job of playing on both ends of the floor."
Following a short break for holiday festivities, the Dustdevils will return to the court to continue conference play at Oklahoma Christian on December 31st. TAMIU will not return to home court until January 7th.
"We now get some rest and enjoy the holidays with family and friends," said Bento-Jackson. "We have a tough road trip upon our return and we only have a few days to prepare. We will learn from this game, build from it, and refocus."
