TAMIU Baseball Dominates TAMUK, 7-2

LAREDO, Texas - Dominant pitching and timely hitting led Texas A&M International to a 7-2 win over South Texas rival Texas A&M-Kingsville on Tuesday after noon at Laredo's Uni-Trade Stadium.  The win evens TAMIU's overall record at 7-7 after starting the season with a 2-5 mark.

TAMIU got all of the offense it would need with a six-hit, four-run bottom of the second inning.  The hitting assault was started with a one-out single to left by Jake Cardoza and concluded with a RBI single to center by Reynaldo Adames.  Five of the six hits were singles with Alex Cabezas adding a ground rule double that hopped over the right field line fence after landing a couple feet fair.

The Dustdevils added three more runs in the fifth inning to build a 7-0 lead.  Daniel Cruz provided TAMIU with a 5-0 lead with a RBI double to left field before Connor Belvin built the lead to 7-0 with a 2-RBI single to right field.

TAMIU out-hit the Javelinas 11-5 with seven Dustdevils joining the hit parade.  Texas A&M-Kingsville did not really mount much of a threat until the game was well in hand due to the outstanding outing by TAMIU starter Jared Curnell.

Curnel (1-1) earned the win with six strong shutout innings for the Dustdevils.  He allowed two hits with six strikeouts and only one walk.  Sammy Alvardo took over for Curnel in the seventh inning and retired the Javelinas in order with two strikeouts.

Kingsville scored two runs off Nick Perales in the eighth inning (one earned) to cut the TAMIU lead to 7-2 but Dino Cristiani ended the game in the ninth inning by striking Blake Johnson with Javelina runners at first and third base.

TAMIU will take a brief break before resuming the season on Mar. 3 with a road game at UH-Victoria.  The Dustdevils will start Heartland Conference play with a series at UT-Permian Basin on Mar. 6-7.
