St. Edward’s Eliminates TAMIU from Heartland Conference Tournament

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – After beating Newman University earlier in the afternoon, the Texas A&M International University Dustdevils (25-25) were knocked out of play from the Heartland Conference double-elimination tournament as they fell to the St. Edward's University Hilltoppers (27-20) Friday evening.
 
TAMIU started the game out with one run in the bottom of the 2nd inning off an RBI single from freshman
Alyssa Acuna, scoring senior Mariena Gallardo at the plate to get up on the scoreboard.
 
Though, St. Edward's came out with two powerful innings in the 3rd and 4th as they scored five and four runs, respectively, including five singles, two doubles, two sacrifice bunts, and a home run.
 
The remainder of the game, the Dustdevils shut the Hilltoppers out and played a game of catch-up, but came up short as they were only able to score one run apiece in the 5th and 6th innings off of St. Edward's relief pitcher, Katelyn Klug (11-11), making the score 9-4 Hilltoppers.
 
TAMIU used four pitchers throughout the entirety of the game. Freshman
Delainy Thompson (8-9) started out in the circle and eventually recorded the loss as she allowed six runs on seven hits in the first three innings pitched. Relieving Thompson was another freshman, Brandi Giles, who pitched 0.1 inning and gave up three runs on three this. Senior duo, Sarah Johnson and Gallardo closed the game out in the last 3.2 innings, only allowing two hits total between the two. Johnson struck out two batters in her 2.2 innings pitched.
 
Gallardo led the team with the bats, as she went 2-3 with one run and two RBI, as she hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Also batting .666 was sophomore
Krissy Sardelich (2-3), including a double in the bottom of the 6th inning. Leading the team in runs with two was sophomore Brenda Parnin who went 2-4 at the plate with a double. Also hitting a double against the Hilltoppers was sophomore Brittany Mussett.

The Dustdevils ended their 2015 season with a .500 winning percentage (25-25) and made key strides throughout the season to beat top teams in the country, such as St. Mary's and Angelo State. The Dustdevils also made their seventh straight Heartland Conference Tournament appearance, while also attaining their all-time best regular season Heartland Conference record at 16-8.
