LAREDO, Texas - St. Mary's University defeated Texas A&M International 4-1 in the regular season finale for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Uni-Trade Stadium.
Â
TAMIU (16-31, 7-19 HC) senior starting pitcher Garret Taggert allowed no runs over the last six innings of his final start but TAMIU could not get its offense on track against St. Mary's (35-12, 22-5) starter Cody Butler. The Dustdevils scored their only run of the game in the fifth inning when Rattler third baseman Matt Smith overthrew first on a Jake Cardoza grounder, allowing Andrew Arteaga to score all the way from first on a three-base throwing error.
Â
Butler (10-2) earned the win with a complete game effort, allowing five hits with nine strikeouts and no walks. Taggert also turned in a gritty complete game effort. He allowed three earned runs on eight hits with one strikeout and two walks.
