LAREDO, Texas (October 27, 2017) – Alan Rivera and
Elias Perales scored in the first half as the Texas A&M International University men's soccer team coasted to a 2-0 victory over St. Mary's on Senior Day in front of 245 fans at Dustdevil Soccer Field. The Dustdevils have now won four straight matches for the first time since 2012 and improve to 10-4-2 (9-4-1 HC) while StMU falls to 9-8-1 (7-7-0).
The Dustdevils dominated for a match for large stretches of time holding a 18-8 advatnage in shots.
Michael Iskander had a match-high four shots in his 65
th career appearance as
Rafael Montabes and Rivera contributed three each.
Carlos Herrera (9-2-2) made five saves en route to his sixth shutout of the season.
Rivera put the Dustdevils up 1-0 in the second minute scoring just the third goal in the first half for the Dustdevils this season. The Phoenix, Ariz. native dribbled through the Rattler defense from right to left before beating the keeper at the near post just outside the penalty area.
The Rattlers came within inches of equalizing in the 15
th minute on a defensive mistake as Mostafa Kamal had a one-on-one with Herrera but his shot was cleared off the line by
Aaron Zuniga to keep the Dustddevils 1-0 lead.
Elias Perales made it 2-0 at 30:46 heading home his second of the season at the far post on a cross from Montabes on the right side. It marked the first time this season that the Dustdevils scored two goals in the first half.
R. Zuniga had a golden opportunity to make it 3-0 at 58:16 after Perales got past his defender on the right side but the junior was unable to get a touch on the cross. Montabes came close at 65:19 but the keeper was able to stretch and make the save on his header on a cross from
David Martinez.
The Dustdevils will host UT Permian Basin on Tuesday, Oct. 31, at 7:00 p.m. in a Heartland Conference quarterfinal match. It will be the first postseason match for TAMIU since 2015.
