LAREDO, Texas (November 9, 2017) - The Texas A&M International University Women's Volleyball team hosted St. Mary's University in the 2017 season finale on Thursday night. The Dustdevils fell 1-3, finishing the season 2-24 overall and 0-12 in the Heartland Conference.
The four-set loss (25-21, 14-25, 16-25, 21-25) ends the season and marks the end of the regular season series between StMU and TAMIU with the Rattlers taking the series 2-0. Senior,
Alejandra Bustamante was honored before the match as the Dustdevils lone senior. Bustamante will finish her four-year career with the programs 7th best mark in all-time digs.
SET 1: TAMIU 25 - StMU 21
The Dustdevils opened the night with the first five points in the match, the early 5-0 lead would be contested by a four-point Rattler run before the Dustdevils pushed the lead back to three (7-4). The Rattlers would come back to tie the set at eight before taking a 10-9 lead. The Dustdevils would fire back with a four-point run, retaking the lead (13-10). TAMIU would not let StMU bring the match even despite a late Rattler push. TAMIu would score four of the final six points en-route to a 25-21 win.
SET 2: TAMIU 14 - StMU 25
TAMIU would open the second set with another lead, jumping ahead 3-1. The Rattlers would use a trio of runs to push back into the game and take a commanding 10 point lead. The Dustdevils would not be able to crack the Rattlers in the second set, falling 14-25.
SET 3: TAMIU 16 - StMU 25
Following the 10 minute intermission, St. Mary's opened the third set with a 6-1 lead before the Dustdevils brought the set within three (3-6). StMU would push their lead back to six before extending the lead to 17-8 at the sets midpoint. The Rattlers kept the Dustdevils from coming within seven through the remainder of the set, taking a 2-1 advantage with a 25-16 win.
SET 4: TAMIU 21 - StMU 25
The Dustdevils looked to force a decisive fifth set in the fourth keeping close tabs on the Rattlers after two straight set wins. The teams would trade leads before StMU opened a 19-15 lead late in the fourth set. The Dustdevils would battle back to bring the set within two points before the Rattlers would put up four of the final six points en-route to a 25-21 win, taking the match 3-1.
