LAREDO, Texas (September 13, 2017) –
The Texas A&M International University women's soccer team returns to Heartland Conference play on Thursday, Sept. 14, with a match against Newman in Wichita, Kan. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Wilkins Field. A link for live stats and video can be found at GoDustdevils.com under the women's soccer schedule.

The Dustdevils  (1-2-1, 0-1-0) will look to pick up their first Heartland Conference win of the season after falling 4-3 to St. Mary's on Sept. 5 in the conference opener for both teams in Laredo. TAMIU finished the second week of the season on a sour note drawing with Eastern New Mexico on Friday followed by a 4-0 loss to Midwestern State on Sunday afternoon.

A LOOK AT THE ALL-TIME SERIES
Thursday's match will be the 17th time the two programs have played with NU leading the all-time series 11-3-2. The Dustdevils have dropped the last three meetings after defeating the Jets 1-0 in overtime on Oct. 4, 2014 for their only away win of the series.

A LOOK AT THE JETS
Aaron Avila has Newman off to a 3-2-0 start in 2017 after finishing 7-6-5 in his season in charge in Wichita. The Jets enter the week on a two match-winning streak outscoring opponents 12-2 during that stretch after falling to Rogers State in the Heartland Conference opener on Sept. 7.

The Jets put up eight goals against Northwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday night with Grace Linton scoring a hat trick. The junior now has a team-high five goals on the season with two of those being of the game-winning variety.  She ranks second in the conference in goals scored tied with St. Mary's Heather Dawson.

Rosa Urista-Chico also had a strong showing on Tuesday scoring a goal while adding two assists brining her season total to three. Colleen Howland is another forward to look at for as the junior scored twice in NU's 4-1 win over Washburn on Sept. 10.

Kyra Butler has been a welcomed addition in the midfield for the Jets as the freshman has played the full 90 minutes in two matches this season. Butler has flourished thanks to the tactical changes made by Avila over the offseason. Emma Stewart is another name to look out for in the midfield as the junior ranks second on the team in assists, both coming in the past two matches.

Ashley Sweetnam has played every minute in goal for a young Jet defense making 13 saves while only allowing eight goals. The redshirt sophomore ranks sixth in the conference in goals against average (1.60) and seventh in saves per game (2.60).

Newcomer Amy Strath has been a key addition on the defensive side of the ball for the Jets as the senior has started in all five games this season. The senior transferred from the University of Bridgeport where she was part of a team that reached the NCAA Division II Elite Eight. Quincy Plank has paired well with Strath in the back anchoring a defense that has allowed only two goals over its previous two matches.

CIO LEADS NATION IN GOALS SCORED
Cio Bargallo is in the form of her life heading into the weekend's set of matches as the sophomore is nation leader in goals scored while ranking in the top five in three other categories. Her seven goals through four games is tied with Cassidy Menke of Missouri Western State for the top goal scorers in Division II. She also ranks second in total points with 14, third in goals per game (1.75) and fourth in points per game (3.5).

DUSTDEVILS IN THE RANKINGS
Bargallo isn't the only Dustdevil that ranks in the top-10 nationally as fellow sophomore Monica Castro ranks 10th in total assists with three. She also ranks 25th in assists per game with 0.75.  As a team, TAMIU ranks 28th in total goals (10) , 38th in scoring offense with 2.5 goals per game, 25th in total points (25) and 50th in points per game with 6.25 points per game.

LOOKING TO BREAK THE STREAK
The Dustdevils enter the third week of the season looking to break a 12 match winless streak on the road that goes back to the final day of the 2015 season. Since defeating #22 St. Edward's on Nov. 29, 2015 thanks to two goals from Kim Garcia, TAMIU has gone 0-9-3 in true road matches.

HEARTLAND CONFERENCE IN THE RANKINGS
St. Edward's moved up one spot into fifth in the latest United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II Women's National Poll that was released on Tuesday. The Hilltoppers also sit atop the South Central Regoinal poll with Dallas Baptist coming in at fourth.  SEU also rank high in the Massey Ratings coming in at eighth with Dallas Baptist at 37th and Lubbock Christian coming in at 40th.
