SAN ANTONIO - Texas A&M International (7-7-2, 6-6-1 HC) lost a 3-2 heartbreaker to rival St. Mary's (10-3-3, 8-3-2 HC) on Thursday.
The Rattlers got things going early as Pato Botello scored his first of three goals on the night as he headed in a cross off a free kick by Nenad Markovic to go up 1-0 in the fourth minute. The Dustdevils answered back as Charlie Michel fired in the equalizer from 15 yards out on a pass from Billy Sanchez in the 26th minute.
In the second half, St. Mary's quickly went to work again retaking the lead 2-1 in the 49th minute as Botello fired in a shot from eight yards out. However, TAMIU responded with a goal from David Martinez, with an assist from Cem Izgec, in the 65th minute to set things even at 2-2.
Things grew rather tense between the two sides down the stretch, with both teams picking up the intensity. A foul by the Dustdevils inside the box setup a penalty kick opportunity for the Rattlers. Botello took the kick and crossed up Carlos Herrera in the goal, giving St. Mary's a 3-2 lead. TAMIU had one final chance to force overtime on a corner kick from Johan Portales in the 87th minute, but couldn't get anything to fall. The Rattlers took the victory with a 3-2 decision.
The Dustdevils will close out the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 27 as they travel to Claremore, Okla. to face off against Rogers State.
