Allen records season high against Newman University

LAREDO, Texas  –  Texas A&M International University women's basketball (0-21, 0-9 Heartland Conference) dropped a 60-48 home decision to the Newman Jets (16-9, 7-4 Heartland Conference) on Saturday afternoon. The loss moves the Dustdevils to 1-6 against the Jets in their last seven matchups dating back to the 2015-16 season.

In the opening stanza, the Dustdevils traded buckets with Newman until TAMIU put together a 9-3 run in a span of 4:17. The run was ignited on an Alliyah Bryant jumper at 5:36 and featured a Tacoya Allen bucket from long distance.

The spurt was capped off on a layup by Christine Ortega with 1:19 showing on the clock that gave the Dustdevils a four-point edge (15-11).  Following the layup, the Jets added a free throw and settled the 15-12 score after one period of play.

The Dustdevils stepped on the gas in the middle of the second quarter and went on an 11-2 scoring spree during a stretch of 3:08 to pull within seven (26-19) of Newman. During that time, Allen buried another shot from long distance while Kendall Alsup nailed a three-pointer to close out the run with 4:58 left in the first half.  

Newman quickly countered by converting on a pair of layups by Kaitlyn Potter and a Braxtyn Stewart shot from beyond the arc with 31 seconds left pushed the Jets out to a one-point lead (29-28) heading into intermission.

In the third quarter, Bria DeGrate scored two layups in 25 seconds to extend the Jets lead to five (33-28) with 9:29 showing on the clock.

The Dustdevils then traded baskets with the Jets until Newman took a 10-2 run that concluded on a Potter triple to swell the lead to a dozen (47-35) with 1:22 left in the third period. A pair of free throws by Ortega cut the Dustdevils' deficit to 10 (47-37) heading into the final quarter.

TAMIU's Vanessa Oyola used five straight points that featured a layup and a three-pointer that brought them within seven with 8:05 remaining in regulation. Newman would later counter with five straight points by Haley Albers including a layup to give the Jets a 14-point lead with 4:56 showing in the scoreboard.

Newman would ultimately hang on for the 60-48 victory on the road.

Alsup (5-of-8 FG, 2-of-4 3FG) finished with a team-high 12 points for the Dustdevils while adding two assists to her statline. Allen totaled season highs of 11 points and a trio of three-pointers by going a perfect 4-of-4 from the field.

For the Jets, Albers (4-of-8 FG, 2-of-5 3 FG) scored a team-high 12 points while both Abbey George (10 points) and DeGrate (11 points) were both one rebound shy of a double-double.

In the end, Texas A&M International shot 35.4 percent (17-of-48) from the field, 41.2 percent (7-of-17) from three-point range and 70 percent (7-of-10) from the free-throw line while the Jets shot 40.4 percent (23-of-57) from the floor, 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from beyond the arc and 52.6 percent (10-of-19) from the charity stripe. Newman held the advantage in rebounds (38-25), and blocks (2-1). The Dustdevils outplayed the Jets in steals (8-7) and assists (14-13).

The Dustdevils travel on the road for Heartland Conference action on Thursday, February 21 to take on the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith (7-16, 4-6 Heartland Conference) at 5:30 p.m.
