TAMIU softball battles No. 21 Tarleton State in non-conference doubleheader

STEPHENVILLE, Texas - Texas A&M International University softball (19-28) dropped an 11-3 (6 Inn.) decision in the opening matchup and fell in the finale of the non-conference doubleheader by a score of 11-2 (6 Inn.) at No. 21 Tarleton State (33-11).

Game 1: No. 21 Tarleton State 11, Texas A&M International 3 (6 Inn.)

In the road half of the first inning cleanup hitter, Shelby Edwards (2-for-3, HR, 3 RBI, R) did not let TexAnns starter, Jordan Withrow (W, 16-4: 7 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 6 K, BB) get comfortable in the circle early on as Edwards launched a two-run home run that cleared the left field fence to give TAMIU a 2-0 edge.

Tarleton State quickly responded by tallying one run in both the first and second innings off of Dustdevils starter, Jenika Lombrana (L, 8-12: 5 IP, 8 H, 8 R, 5 ER, 5 K, 0 BB). In the first inning, the TexAnns used a Destiny Crumpley RBI double to drive home a run to cut their deficit to one (2-1) and then capitalized on a solo home run by Lexi Grimaldo to knot the game at two apiece.

Tarleton State then scored a trio of runs in the bottom of the third inning that featured back-to-back run scoring doubles by Georgia Capell (2-for-3, RBI, 2 R, BB) and Tannia Huie (2-for-3, HR, 4 RBI, 3 R, SB), respectively. Later in the inning, Huie would later steal home and extend their lead to three (5-2).

The TexAnns would ultimately use three more home runs by Karli Herron, Amanda Conner and Huie, respectively, to secure the 11-3 run-rule victory in six innings.

Game 2: No. 21 Tarleton State 11, Texas A&M International 2 (6 Inn.)

In game two of the twin bill, Tarleton State got on the scoreboard in the opening inning when Huie (2-for-4, 3 RBI, R) smacked a triple to right field off of Dustdevils starter Sara Caterson (L, 7-8: 4 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 3 K, 3 BB) that scored Capell (2-for-2, HR, RBI, 3 R, 2 BB) to give the TexAnns a 1-0 lead.

TAMIU quickly countered by compiling a pair of runs in the top of the second frame on an Erin Mosley (2-for-2, RBI) RBI single off of TexAnn starter Rachel Williams (W, 5-0: 6 IP, 3 H, 2 R, ER, K, BB)  that plated home Edwards while Chavarria scored on an error by Capell to put the Dustdevils a one-run lead (2-1).

In the bottom of the third inning, Tarleton State battled back as Capell smacked a solo home run over the left field fence to tie the game at two. Three batters later, Herron knocked a triple to right field that scored Crumpley that gave the TexAnns a 3-2 advantage. The next hitter, Conner hit an RBI double to left center that scored Danyell Kesselus to extend their lead to two (4-2). Following Conner, Grimaldo hit an RBI single to left center field that capped off the four-run inning and gave Tarleton State a 5-2 edge.

Tarleton State later tacked on six more runs that was highlighted by a pair of sixth inning two-run home runs by Huie and Conner to settle the 11-2 run-rule win.

The Dustdevils conclude their 14-game road trip on Thursday, April 18 with a doubleheader against St. Mary's (27-19, 16-9 Heartland Conference) at 2 p.m.
