LAREDO, Texas - Texas A&M International University softball (22-29) closed out its non-conference schedule on a high note by securing a 6-5 walk-off victory in the opening matchup, and an 8-0 run-rule victory over the Angelo State Rambelles (31-19).
Game 1: Texas A&M International 6, Angelo State 5
The Rambelles got on the scoreboard first in the top of the third inning when Taegan Kirk (2-for-4, HR, RBI, R) hit a solo home run over the left field fence off of TAMIU starter Melanie Lint (ND: 5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, K, 3 BB). Three batters later, Maleya Burns smacked a solo home run to center field to extend their lead to two (2-0).
In the top of the fourth inning, the Rambelles added another run on a throwing error by center fielder Maddison Schofield (1-for-2, HR, 2 RBI, BB) that scored Logan Graham to give them a 3-0 advantage.
In the home half of the fourth inning, the Dustdevils fought back thanks to a two-run home run by Shelby Edwards (1-for-3, HR, 2 RBI, R) off of Rambelles starter Meagan Hill (L, 15-8 : 6.2 IP, 6 H, 6 ER, 6 K, 2 BB), that plated home Schofield and pulled TAMIU within one (3-2).
In the road half of the sixth inning, Jenika Lombrana (W, 10-12 : 2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 5 K, BB) entered the game in relief of Lint. Lombrana retired three consecutive Rambelles including a pair of strikeouts. The first strikeout was the freshman's 100th strikeout thrown this season. Â Â
In the bottom of the sixth inning, TAMIU used another two-run big fly off the bat of Schofield that allowed Chavarria to score and take a 4-3 lead.
Angelo State countered in the top of the last inning by capitalizing on a throwing error by Dustdevils catcher, Edwards that brought home Courtney Barnhill and Ashlyn Lerma to give the Rambelles a one-run lead heading into the bottom of the last inning (5-4).
Angel Jimenez (2-for-3, HR, RBI, R) sparked a rally in the final inning as she smacked a leadoff blast over the left field fence to knot the game at five apiece. Later in the frame Maya Paul capped off the rally by hitting a walk-off single through the left side that drove home Erin Mosley to seal the 6-5 victory. Â
Game 2: Texas A&M International 8, Angelo State 0 (5 Inn.)
In the final game of the doubleheader, TAMIU compiled seven runs in the bottom of the second frame. Heather Ruiz kicked off the big inning with an RBI double down the right field line off of Rambelles starer, Makayla Corbin (L, 10-8: 1.1 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, BB) that scored Lindsey Smith for the first run of the game.
Following the double, TAMIU put together three straight singles by Mosley (2-for-3, RBI, R), RBI single, by Melanie Gamboa (1-for-2, RBI, R) and Paul (3-for-3, R), respectively, to give TAMIU a 2-0 lead. Edwards (1-for-2, HR, 3 RBI, R) capped off the scoring spree by hitting a three-run home run, her second goner of the day, over the left field fence. Â Â
In the circle, Dustdevils starter Sara Caterson (W, 8-9: 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 4 K, 3 BB) was phenomenal as she threw four strikeouts and only surrendered four hits en route to a complete-game shutout.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Mosley hit a two-out RBI single that drove home Briana Arredondo to secure the 8-0 run-rule victory.
The Dustdevils continue their five-game homestand on Friday, April 26 with a doubleheader against the Lubbock Christian Lady Chaparrals (28-15, 15-12 Heartland Conference) at 12 p.m.
