LAREDO, Texas - Texas A&M International University softball (24-30, 15-15 Heartland Conference) won its final regular season finale 5-4 over the Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaparrals (29-17, 16-14 Heartland Conference) on Saturday afternoon.
In the top of the second inning, the Lady Chaps broke the scoring ice as Breanna Anderson hit an RBI double to left center field off of Dustdevils starter, Melanie Lint (ND: 2.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, ER, K, BB) that drove home Alivia Villarreal (2-for-3, 2 RBI, R).
The Dustdevils quickly countered with back-to-back home runs by Shelby Edwards and Lindsey Smith, respectively off of Lady Chaps starter, Jordan Wehr (ND: 2.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 K, 2 BB) to start the home half of the second inning and give TAMIU its first lead of the game (2-1).
In the top of the third, KK Lopez-Liu hit an RBI single through the left side to score Savannah Wysocki and knot the game at two apiece. Two batters later, Villarreal brought home a pair of Lady Chaps to push Lubbock Christian ahead 4-2.
Following the single by Villarreal, Head Coach Scott Libby called on Jenika Lombrana (W, 11-13: 4.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 7 K, 0 BB) in relief. Throughout the stellar outing, she allowed just one baserunner, Alexa Riggs, who hit a single in the top of the seventh inning.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Erin Mosley hit a fly ball to the left fielder, Anderson, who couldn't make the catch which allowed Smith to touch home and cut the deficit to one (4-3).
In the bottom of the last inning, the Dustdevils mounted a comeback starting with a Maya Paul (2-for-4, R) single and was followed by a pinch-hit walk by Briana Cruz. After the walk, Schofield smacked an RBI double to tie the game at four off of Lubbock Christian relief pitcher, Amber Carlton (L, 7-4: 3.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, ER, 2 K, BB). Two batters later, Smith brought in the game-winning run on a fielding error by the shortstop, Riggs, and allowed Morgan Chavarria to cross the plate and secure the 5-4 Senior Day walk-off victory.
The Dustdevils earned the No. 5 seed in next week's Heartland Conference Championship and will take on the No. 4 seed, Lubbock Christian University (29-17, 16-14 Heartland Conference) on Thursday, May 2. The time and location of the matchup will be announced at a later date.
