LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International volleyball (2-5) will wrap up the season opening road trip with stops at UT Tyler and Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday and Saturday.
Last week, the Dustdevils went 1-3 at the Skyhawk Volleyball Tournament with a sweep over Lone Star Conference foe Western New Mexico. Sophomore Mackenzie Catalina leads TAMIU with 85 kills, 48 of which she logged in the four matches of the tournament.
TAMIU will face off against LSC opponent UT Tyler (5-3) in the first game of the road trip on Friday. UTT finished the Southeastern Classic last week with a 3-1 record in the tournament, notching wins over Colorado State-Pueblo, East Central and host Southeastern Oklahoma State. The Patriots are led on offense by freshman Kylee Becker, who averages 3.0 kills per set with a .307 hitting percentage. Sophomore Savannah Guzman anchors the defense with an average of 3.81 digs per set.
On Saturday, the Dustdevils will face their first ranked opponent of the season when they match up against No. 21 Texas A&M-Commerce (5-3). The Lions went split their four matches in the Colorado Premier Tournament, including an upset of top-ranked Tampa in a five-set thriller. The Lions are bolstered by senior Shelley Chapron, who is averaging 3.50 kills per set. She also leads the LSC in blocks with a 1.32 block per set average, 45 blocks total.
