TAMIU drops match to UTPB

ODESSA, Texas - Texas A&M International volleyball (1-1) dropped their second match of the Dr. Steve Aicinena Invitational to tournament host and Lone Star Conference foe UT Permian Basin (2-0) with a 3-0 decision (18-25, 19-25, 12-25) on Friday.

Three Dustdevils led the way with Mackenzie Catalina, Sammantha Herrera and Carly Unruh all tallying six kills. Catalina added six digs while Herrera added four digs and Uruh added a dig and a block. Annie Deininger put together five kills, three blocks and a dig. Allison Wade registered eight digs, with Maison Kosse contributing 26 assists.

TAMIU jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the first set, but the Falcons rallied to tie things at 3-3 and then took their first lead at 5-4. The Dustdevils briefly retook the lead 7-6, however a 5-0 run by UTPB gave the Falcons a 11-7 advantage. TAMIU attempted to play catch up but a 6-0 run by the Falcons put the set out of reach as they took a 23-16 lead and eventually took the set 25-18.

The second set was tightly contested early as the two teams traded points with two ties and two lead changes. UTPB managed to break out with a 6-2 run to take a 14-11 lead. The Dustdevils managed to trim the lead to two points at 16-14 and 17-15, but that is as close as they would get in the set. The Falcons eventually took the set 25-19.

The third set began much like the second set with three ties. With UTPB up 9-4, TAMIU dug in their heels to rally back with a 4-0 run to tie things 9-9. Unfortunately, the Falcons answered with a 7-1 run to take a 16-10 lead. They put the match away by closing out the set with a 9-2 run in route to a 25-12 decision to seal the win.

The Dustdevils will close out the tournament tomorrow at 11 a.m. as they face off against Westminster in the tournament finale.
