LAREDO, Texas -Â Texas A&M International men's basketball (3-15, 1-11 LSC) took down Eastern New Mexico (5-11, 5-6 LSC) in a thrilling 76-71 victory.
Four Dustdevils finished in double figures in the win. Junior Matija Novkovic led TAMIU with a season-high 22 points, shooting 7-for-12 from the field and 6-for-7 at the free throw line. He also added three rebounds and two steals. Sophomore Tom Higgins posted a double-double of 16 points and 15 rebounds with two assists and two steals. Senior Caleb Highley logged a double-double of his own with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Calvin Fugett Jr. contributed 11 points with five assists, a rebound and a steal.
The Dustdevils were on fire out of the gate as the tore off an 11-2 run to start the game. They continued to drain shots as they took a 20 point lead at 30-10 with six minutes left in the half. The Greyhounds slowly began to claw back into the game late in the period, but TAMIU took a 36-22 advantage into the intermission.
After the break, ENMU didn't look fazed by the large deficit as the opened the second half on a 9-4 run to cut the lead to 40-31 just over three minutes in. They continued to chip away at the deficit and took their first lead since the opening moments of the game a 43-42 with 13:09 left. Things were incredibly close for the remainder of the half, with five lead changes and four ties over the next eight minutes. The Dustdevils went on a 12-4 run to retake the lead 68-60 with just 2:45 left. They managed to hold off the Greyhounds and hung on for a 76-71 decision for their first Lone Star Conference victory.
TAMIU will look to keep the momentum rolling on Saturday, Jan. 25 as they play host to No. 4 West Texas A&M at 3 p.m.
