LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International baseball (0-2, 0-2 LSC) dropped a 7-4 decision to UAFS (2-0, 2-0 LSC) on Saturday.
Both teams pitched a clean first inning to start the game. However, the Lions busted the game open in the top of the second with four runs. The first two runs came in on a two RBI single, with the second run scoring on a fielding error by the third baseman. Another run scored on an error by the shortstop. The final run of the inning crossed as the batter was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
UAFS tacked on two more runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 6-0 lead. The first run came on a leadoff solo homer to right. The other run came in from third as the batter grounded into a 6-3 double play. The Dustdevils were able to get on the board in the bottom half and cut into the lead 6-2. Paris Johnson scored on a Luis Flores single. Flores then scored on an Adrian Castillo single to right.
Both team's pitching staffs held the game in check for the next three innings.
In the top of the eighth, the Lions added one final run on an error by the second baseman. TAMIU trimmed the lead to 7-4 in the bottom half of the inning. Johnson scored on a Flores double to right center, and Flores scored as Nate Campos grounded out to first.
UAFS's Cooper Van Kooten earned the win, with Trevor Johnson earning the save. TAMIU's Andrew Pavon took the loss in the decision.
The series will wrap on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 12 p.m.
