SAN ANTONIO – Texas A&M International volleyball (0-2, 0-2 LSC) fell 3-0 (21-25, 23-25, 18-25) to St. Mary's (2-0, 2-0 LSC) on Wednesday.
Junior Mackenzie Catalina led the Dustdevils with 16 kills as well as eight digs and an ace. Freshman McKenna Flagler posted 29 assists with seven digs, two kills and a block. On the defensive end, junior Deserey Gomez contributed 11 digs, a kill and an assist.
The opening set was extremely tight through the midway point with neither team able to gain a sizable lead. With the score tied at 14-14, the Rattlers went on a 4-1 run to take a 18-15 lead. However, TAMIU answered with a 6-2 run to retake the lead 21-20. Unfortunately, St. Mary's scored five-straight points to take the frame 25-21.
The Dustdevils rebounded in the second set with a 5-1 run to start the frame. The Rattlers counterpunched with a 9-2 run to take the lead 10-7. TAMIU didn't flinch and battled to tie things at 12-12, and eventually retook the lead 18-17. Unfortunately, St. Mary's tied it up at 20-20 as part of the a 6-3 run to take the 25-23 decision.
The third set was all Rattlers as they opened on a 9-3 run. The Dustdevils fought to get back into the set and were able to get within one point at 14-13. Unfortunately, St. Mary's responded with a 7-0 run to go back up 20-13, and eventually took the sweep with a 25-18 decision.
TAMIU will return home on Tuesday, Feb. 2 to begin a two-game set with St. Edward's. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
