KINGSVILLE, Texas – Texas A&M International women's basketball (4-1, 3-1 LSC) kept their three-game win streak alive as the held on for the 55-50 victory over the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas (2-2, 2-2 LSC).
Sophomore Clara Fernandez led the Dustdevils with a season-high 17 points to go along with five rebounds, two steals and an assist. Senior Nicole Heyn finished just shy of a double-double with nine points and a season-high 18 rebounds as well as five steals, three assists and a block. Senior Patrycja Jaworska posted eight points with four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Junior Josselin Geer contributed seven points with a season-high 11 rebounds and an assist.
The first quarter was tightly contested with two lead changes and two ties. Neither team was able to get more than a two possession lead, with the Javelinas taking a narrow 15-13 advantage into the final 10 minutes of the half.
The Dustdevils came alive in the second quarter with a 13-0 run to start, taking a 26-15 lead. TAMUK didn't score in the period until two minutes left and managed to close out the half on a 6-1 run to trim TAMIU's lead to 27-21 going into the intermission.
The Javelinas carried over their momentum from the first half with an 8-2 run to tie things at 29-29 to start the third quarter. However, the Dustdevils steadied themselves and responded with a 12-1 run to go back up 41-30 heading to the final 10 minute period.
In the fourth quarter, TAMUK showed they still had some fight left in them as they opened the period on another 8-2 run to trim the lead to 43-38. However, the Dustdevils managed to keep the Javelinas at bay to take the 55-50 victory.
TAMIU will get a week off before they host St. Edward's on Thursday, Jan. 14 at 4 p.m.
