Closing 11-2 Run Lifts Dustdevils Past Hilltoppers 72-63

AUSTIN, Texas – Texas A&M International women's basketball used a late 11-2 run to seal a non-conference victory over Lone Star Conference foe St. Edward's 72-63.
 
In the opening 1:23 it was the Hilltoppers (6-4, 0-0 LSC) who held a 6-0 lead behind two three pointers and held that edge until 6:23 remained in the quarter.
 
Over that final stretch, the Dustdevils (7-1, 0-0 LSC) went on a 16-6 run to take a 16-12 lead into the second quarter.
 
TAMIU grew its lead to 11 points in the second, holding a 26-15 edge with 6:48 remaining in the half. However, it was St. Edward's who finished the quarter on a 14-2 run to take a 29-28 lead into the break.
 
In the third quarter, the Dustdevils eventually tied the game at 34-34 and then proceeded to go on a 14-3 run to reopen a 11-point, 48-37 lead with 3:54. The lead eventually grew to 12 (52-40), but a 9-2 Hilltopper run made it just 54-49 after three quarters.
 
TAMIU held the lead throughout the majority of the fourth quarter, before St. Edward's tied the game at 59-59 with 4:09 remaining.
 
The game was then tied yet again at 61-61 after the teams exchanged baskets, before a Dustdevil 11-2 run closed the game, with the Hilltoppers final basket coming with two seconds remaining.
 
The Dustdevils finished the night shooting 45.1% from the floor (23-for-51) and 4-for-13 from deep. The free-throw line was exceptional for TAMIU, shooting 22-for-26 on the night.
 
St. Edwards on the other hand shot just 38.3% from the field (23-for-60), 8-for-25 from three and converted nine of 11 free throws.
 
Despite being outrebounded 37-32, the Dustdevils outscored the Hilltoppers 34-18 in the paint and forced 29 turnovers.
 
TAMIU only had two players in double figures and it was again sophomore Rai Brown leading the way with 29 points on 12-for-19 shooting to go alongside four rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal.
 
Senior Eva Langton followed behind with 13 points, six rebounds, two assists, two blocks and six steals.
 
The Dustdevils close out their non-conference matchups against LSC opponents on Saturday, Dec. 18. TAMIU travels to San Antonio, Texas to meet St. Mary's for a 2 p.m. tip.
