LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International baseball (2-2, 2-2 LSC) fell 6-2 in the first game of a doubleheader in the home opening series to No. 10 UT-Tyler (2-2, 2-2 LSC) on Friday.
The first two innings were a pitcher's duel with three hits between both starters.
The Dustdevils cracked the seal in the bottom of the third with one run to go up 1-0. The inning started with Ariben Gutierrez getting a base hit on bunt that rode the fair side of the third base line, and a groundout to short moved him to second. Andrew Holsey drove him in with an RBI double down the left field line.
The Patriots tied it up with a solo homer to start the sixth inning. They broke the game open with three runs in the seventh to take a 4-1 lead. The first run came in on an RBI single. A sacrifice fly to right brought in the second run, with the third run scoring on an RBI single to right center.
TAMIU got a run back in the bottom of the eighth to shrink the margin to 4-2. Gutierrez scored on a error by the third baseman.
UTT added two more runs in the ninth to take the win 6-2 off a two RBI double to right center.
Austin Schneider (1-1) earned the win. Zach Pena (1-1) took the loss.
Game two of the doubleheader was suspended in the top of the ninth due to darkness. The game will be resumed at 12 p.m. on Saturday with both team facing off in the series finale 30 minutes after completion of game two.
