LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International baseball (7-24, 6-23 LSC) fell in a doubleheader to Eastern New Mexico (8-26, 7-24 LSC) on Friday.
GAME 1 - ENMU 9, TAMIU 4
The Greyhounds jumped on the board in the opening frame of the first game of the day to take a 2-0 early lead. Both runs came on a two-run homer to right center.
The Dustdevils answered in the bottom of the second to tie things up at 2-2. After reaching base on an error by the third baseman and eventually making his way to third, Brock Hargens scored on a Daniel Quiroz RBI groundout to the second baseman. Later in the inning, Sergio Esqueda brought home Ronnie Bailey with a sacrifice fly to right.
ENMU retook the lead 3-2 in the top of the fourth on a bases loaded walk. They added to their lead in the fifth on a three-homer to go up 6-3.
In the bottom of the seventh, TAMIU was able to get one run back to cut the lead to 6-4. Ariben Gutierrez crossed on a fielder's choice by Matt Kissamis.
The Greyhounds extended their lead in the top for the eighth to take the 9-4 victory. All three runs came on a second three-run blast over the left field wall.
Fernando Burgos (1-0) earned the win. Abanny Garcia (1-4) took the loss.
GAME 2 - ENMU 12, TAMIU 11
ENMU wasted no time in the first inning of the second game as they exploded for six runs. A two RBI double to left scored the first two runs with three RBI singles and an error by the shortstop scoring the other runs.
The Dustdevils responded in the bottom half of the inning getting three of the runs back to cut the deficit to 6-3. Philip Sanchez scored on a Kissamis RBI single down the left field line. Hargens brought in Kissamis and Paris Johnson with a two RBI single through the right side of the infield.
The Greyhounds tacked on an insurance run in the second to push out to a 7-3 lead. The run scored on an RBI double to center. They added another run in the third on a ground out to the pitcher.
In the bottom of the third, TAMIU battled to cut the lead to 8-5. A Luis Flores RBI single up the middle scored Hargens and a bases loaded walk to Johnson brought home Flores.
ENMU pushed out to a 10-5 lead in the top of the fifth inning with two more runs. An RBI single through the left side of the infield brought in one run, with the other run coming on a sacrifice fly to center.
Once again, the Dustdevils got both runs back to trim the lead to 10-7. Johnson scored both Isaac Gonzalez and Flores with a two RBI double down the left field line.
The Greyhounds added a run in the top of the sixth push out to 11-7 with an RBI double to left center.Â
TAMIU would pull within one run at 11-10 in the bottom of the seventh. Kissamis plated both Johnson and Sanchez with a two RBI double to right center, and would advance himself to third on the throw home. He scored on a Bailey RBI single through the left side of the infield.
The Dustdevils tied the game at 11-11 in the bottom of the eighth as Gonzalez scored on a Sanchez RBI double to right center.
However, the Greyhounds would retake the lead as a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher scored the go ahead run from second.
TAMIU would get a runner on base in the bottom of the ninth, but leave him stranded to give ENMU the 12-11 victory.
Cooper Hamilton (2-3) earned the win. Hugo Mediola (1-3) took the loss.
The Dustdevils will look to salvage one game in the series finale tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
