OKLAHOMA CITY – No. 6-seed Texas A&M-International softball (26-19) fell to No. 2-seed Angelo State (33-11) in a 5-4 decision in the Lone Star Conference Tournament semifinal on Friday.
After a perfect inning from both starters to open the game, the Rambelles exploded to take an early 3-0 lead. Two RBI doubles to left and right field scored the first two runs, with a wild pitch scoring the third run.
The Dustdevils got a run back in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit to 3-1. Victoria Gonzalez plated Felicity Bernal with a single to right.Â
They tied the game 3-3 in the fourth with two more runs. Melanie Gamboa drove in Briana Arredondo with a double down the left field line. Erika Cortez crossed home on ground out to second.
ASU retook the lead 4-3 with a run in the bottom of the fifth. The run scored on a fielder's choice to second base. They sealed their victory 5-3 in the sixth with a solo homer to right center.
Genesis Armendariz (13-5) earned the win. Erika Cortez (15-8) took the loss.
The Dustdevils will now wait to see if the hard work they have put in is good enough to earn a berth in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional. The NCAA Division II Softball Selection Show will air Sunday, May 16 at 9 p.m. on NCAA.com.
