KINGSVILLE, Texas – Texas A&M International women's basketball were unable to ever establish a groove, falling for the third time in a row and second in a row to Texas A&M-Kingsville, 67-39 in a Lone Star Conference road matchup.
Â
The Javelinas (11-4, 4-0 LSC) took the early 3-0 lead and went coast-to-coast, never allowing the Dustdevils (10-4), 1-2 LSC) to hold a lead throughout the entire contest.
Â
TAMUK sparked early to hold a 23-11 lead through the opening quarter and grew upon that lead, outscoring TAMIU 17-9 in the second to lead 40-20 at the half.
Â
Both teams did little offensively in the second half, with the Javelinas holding an 11-8 edge in the third and then 16-11 in the fourth to equate to the 67-39 final.
Â
TAMIU in the loss shot just 14-for-49 (28.6%) from the floor, but were hurt immensely by the three-point line, where they went just 1-for-17. Again, the free throw line was unkind, shooting 10-for-22 from the stripe.
Â
On the other side, TAMUK shot 22-for-48 (45.8%) from the floor and were 11-23 (47.8%) from deep. The Javelinas capitalized on 12 of 14 free throws.
Â
Sophomore
Rai Brown was the lone Dustdevil to reach double figures, scoring 10 points and collecting five rebounds.
Â
Freshman
Evelyn Quiroz followed with eight points and three rebounds, while sophomore
Emily Swiercz chipped in six points, five rebounds and four assists.
Â
TAMIU must put the three game skid behind them as it prepares for a two-game home stand beginning Thursday, Jan. 20. Oklahoma Christian comes to Laredo for a 5:30 p.m. tip.
