LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International women's soccer ended the 2022 season on a high note, upsetting #14 West Texas A&M 3-1 in the home finale.
Â
The score through on half of play was 1-0 in favor of the Lady Buffs (12-2-4, 6-2-4 LSC) after a goal scored 17:50 into the half.
Â
Out of halftime, a pivotal moment happened at the 47:05 mark, as West Texas A&M received a red card just 2:05 into the second half.
Â
At 57:59, the Dustdevils (5-6-6, 2-4-6 LSC) capitalized to tie the game 1-1 on a goal by redshirt sophomore
Andrea Castellanos.
Â
13:30 later, junior Marta Forne scored her third goal of the season on an assist from Castellanos.
Â
The duo would work together again at the 85:48 mark, when Forne scored her second of the game and fourth of the season off a corner set piece from Castellanos.
Â
TAMIU was outshot in the game 14-10, but had more chances on goal, 7-5.
Â
Castellanos had five shots to lead the team and her three shots on goal also led the team. Forne and junior Lucia Cuadra both had two shots, both on goal.
Â
Junior
Fabiana Solano was great in net, stopping four of the five shots she faced against the number two scoring offense in the conference.
Â
The Dustdevils season ends falling just short of the Lone Star Conference Tournament, but there is a reason to be optimistic as all but one player is eligible to return on a team that had 12 points in the conference and defeated a top 15 opponent and nearly matched the naiton's number one team.
