Dustdevils Capitalize At Free Throw Line To Top Grizzlies 67-54

LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International women's basketball took the floor for the last time before Lone Star Conference play began, defeating Adams State 67-54.
 
TAMIU earned its way to victory by capitalizing greatly at the free-throw line, where it connected 31 times on a total of 45 attempts. The large amount of opportunities came from a staggering 51 total fouls called in the game.
 
It was a slow start to the game as the Grizzlies (4-1, 0-0 RMAC) led 3-0 over the first three minutes, until the Dustdevils went on an 8-0 run to take a five-point lead.
 
Adams State would tie the game 8-8 and from there the teams traded baskets with TAMIU leading 14-12 through one.
 
The score would stay close in the second quarter, ultimately being tied at 18-18 with 6:24 left, but the Dustdevils (4-1, 0-0 LSC) then used an 11-0 run over the next four minutes to lead 29-18 and then take a 30-23 lead into the half.
 
After the half, the Grizzlies chipped away, cutting the deficit to four and outscored TAMIU 15-10 to trail just 40-38 through three quarters.
 
In the fourth, the Dustdevils would spark for 27 points behind 6-for-10 shooting from the floor and 14-for-19 from the free-throw line, while defensively holding Adams State to 16 points to seal the victory.
 
For the game, the Dustdevils shot 42.5% (17-for-40) from the floor and made two of 10 attempts from behind the arc. Again, TAMIU took 45 free-throws in the game and connected on 31.
 
On the other side, the Dustdevils defense limited the Grizzlies to 31.3% (20-for-64) shooting from the field and 3-for-21 (14.3%) from behind the arc. Adams State got to take 20 free-throws on the night and made 11.
 
Junior Rai Brown led TAMIU in scoring with her fourth 20+ point game of the season, scoring 21 with three rebounds and a pair of steals and assists
 
Sophomore Evelyn Quiroz chipped in 14 points behind 12-for-18 at the free-throw line to go alongside seven rebounds and six assists.
 
Junior Clara Fernandez earned her first double-double of the season with 12 points, 11 rebounds, two blocks and three steals.
 
Junior Marija Bakic filled the stat sheet, scoring seven points, while adding nine rebounds and four assists.
 
The Dustdevils return to action on Thursday, Dec. 1 when they open LSC play in Odessa, Texas against UT Permian Basin. Opening tip is scheduled for 5:15 p.m
