LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International women's basketball swept its week of games with a commanding 63-41 victory over St. Edward's.
The Dustdevils (14-6, 5-4 LSC) dominated the opening two quarters, holding a 15-9 edge after one quarter and then 15-5 in the second quarter to hold a 30-14 lead at the half.
TAMIU limited the Hilltoppers (11-12, 4-8 LSC) to just 6-for-25 shooting in the first half and the Dustdevils shot just under 50% at 12-for-25.
TAMIU continued its stranglehold of the lead outscoring St. Edward's 15-8 in the third to take a 45-22 lead.
The fourth quarter saw the Hilltoppers finally score in double-digits, as they held a 19-18 edge over the Dustdevils, but too late as TAMIU sealed the dominant victory.
In the win, TAMIU shot an outstanding 27-for-48 (56.3%) from the floor, including 6-for-7 (85.7%) in the second quarter and 8-for-11 (72.7%) in the fourth. The Dustdevils were just 2-for-10 from deep and 7-for-10 from the free-throw line.
TAMIU was unstoppable inside, outscoring St. Edward's 50-18 in the paint and in points off turnovers, 29-19. The Dustdevils out-rebounded the Hilltoppers 31-20 as well.
On the other side, St. Edward's shot 16-for-53 (30.2%) from the floor and 4-for-17 from three (23.5%).
Sophomore
Clara Fernandez had yet another all-around spectacular game, scoring a game and season high 21 points with five rebounds and six steals.
Sophomore
Rai Brown followed with 14 points on 7-for-9 shooting, along with four rebounds, one block and three steals.
Freshman
Evelyn Quiroz chipped in 11 points, nine rebounds, six assists and two steals, while senior
Eva Langton added six points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals.
After a successful week, TAMIU now prepares for a two-game road trip, beginning with UT Permian Basin on Thursday, Feb. 10. Opening tip is slated for 5:15 p.m.
