Dustdevils Fall To Rattlers 4-3 In Non-Conference Matchup

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Texas A&M International softball concluded play against St. Mary's on Saturday in non-conference action, and in the end, it was the Rattlers getting the walk-off victory to top the Dustdevils, 4-3.
 
St. Mary's was the first to crack the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead on an RBI walk.
 
After being halted the first three innings, TAMIU tied the game in the top of the fourth when freshman Sara Papizan reached on an error that allowed sophomore Nyomi Moncivais to score.
 
The Rattlers answered right back in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to regain the lead.
 
The Dustdevils quickly took their first lead of the game in the top of the fifth after RBI singles from freshman Dynasty Harpel and sophomore Victoria Gonzalez.
 
St. Mary's tied the game right away, on an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth, followed by a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh to take the win.
 
Papizan got the start in the circle and in 5.1 innings of work allowed three runs, six hits, six walks and struck out three.
 
Freshman Carla Arellano pitched 2/3 of an inning and allowed one run, one hit and walked one.
 
Offensively, TAMIU collected ten hits with Gonzalez and junior Heather Ruiz leading the way, both going 3-for-4 on the afternoon. Graduate student Melanie Gamboa added a 2-for-2 showing, while Harpel and fellow freshman Eva Garcia both contributed a hit.
 
The Dustdevils look to end their current drought as they take on St. Edward's in conference action on Sunday, Mar. 6 in Austin, Texas. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
