LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International men's basketball took command at the beginning of the second half and held on for the win over Cameron, 76-71 on Thursday night.
The first half was a back-and-forth slugfest, as the largest lead favored TAMIU (16-11, 9-10 LSC) which was eight points, and come halftime the score stood at 37-36 in favor of the Aggies.
Out of halftime, TAMIU would grow its lead to 63-52, but Cameron (4-22, 2-18 LSC) would use a 10-2 run to cut the lead to 65-62 with 2:36 left in the game.
The Dustdevils responded with an 8-4 run to take a 73-66 lead with 28 seconds left and held on for the win.
For the game, TAMIU shot 44.3% from the field (27-for-61), 6-for-26 from deep (23.1%) and were strong from the free-throw line, making 16-of-22 attempts (72.7%).
On the other side, the Chaps finished 26-for-55 (47.3%) from the floor, and 6-for-16 (37.5%) from three, while finishing 13-for-14 (92.9%) from the charity stripe.
The Dustdevils were led offensively by graduate student
Greg Bowie II finished with 16 points, two rebounds, and an assist.
Senior
Jermaine Drewey chipped in 13 points and five rebounds, junior
Tyrese Davis added 11 points and four rebounds and sophomore
Lonzo Rand scored 10 points.
TAMIU outscored Cameron 36-13 in bench points.
With the victory, Texas A&M International moved up the eighth place in the conference with three games remaining.
The Dustdevils now prepare for Midwestern State, who enters Laredo for a 3 p.m. tip on Saturday, Feb. 18.
