Dustdevils Down Mustangs 88-85 In Overtime Thriller

LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International women's basketball got back in the win column after a thrilling 88-85 overtime victory over Midwestern State on Saturday.

The first quarter was low scoring and defensive, as the teams battled back and forth, with the Mustangs (5-22, 3-18 LSC) holding a 13-12 at the end of the opening 10 minutes.

Midwestern State would continue to hold serve in the second quarter, using the first 7:08 to gain a seven-point, 28-21 lead. However, TAMIU (13-15, 6-14 LSC) trimmed the deficit over the last 2:52 to trail just 32-30 at the break.

The third quarter was as even as the first quarter, with both teams trading scores and neither team holding a lead more than four, where it stood at the end of the period with the Mustangs holding a 51-47 edge.

Midwestern State would use a total run of 8-0 between the end of the third and beginning of the fourth to open a 10-point lead with 8:37 remaining.

Once again, the Dustdevils charged back and used an 11-0 run of their own over the next 2:20 to take a 58-57 lead.

TAMIU held a lead no greater than two points until taking a 72-68 lead with 1:04 remaining, the again with 15 seconds remaining at 74-70.

Midwestern State would hit a three with six seconds remaining to make it 74-73 and after two successful free-throws by the Dustdevils, the Mustangs would again hit a three with .8 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.

The teams traded baskets to open the overtime period, and then TAMIU went on a 7-0 run in a 47 second span to lead 85-78 with 2:50 remaining.

Midwestern State, still trailing 87-81 with 31 seconds remaining used a 4-0 run to make it 87-85 with eight seconds left.

The Dustdevils made one of two free throws, giving the Mustangs another chance, but this time the buzzer-beater three fell short as TAMIU sealed the win.

For the game, the Dustdevils shot 30-for-72 (41.7%) from the floor, 4-for-17 (23.5%) from three and 24-for-36 (66.7%) from the charity stripe.

On the other end, Midwestern State shot 27-for-66 (40.9%) from the floor, 7-for-23 (30.4%) from deep and 24-for-33 (72.7%) from the line.

Junior Rai Brown led the team offensively, scoring 28 points with six rebounds and five steals across 30 minutes of action.

Fellow junior Marija Bakic put together a near triple-double, scoring 13 points with 12 rebounds and nine assists.

Sophomore Vanessa Herrera netted 12 points to go alongside three rebounds, three assists and four steals, while freshman Angelique Morgan also scored 12 points with a pair of rebounds and three assists.

Junior Emily Swiercz was the fifth Dustdevil in double figures, scoring 11 points with two rebounds and three steals.

TAMIU returns to the floor on Thursday, Feb. 23 for the final road contest of the season, when they travel to Kingsville, Texas for a 5:30 p.m. tip against Texas A&M-Kingsville.
