LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International Basketball ended the season with a nail-bitter, 65-64 victory over Texas A&M Kingsville on Saturday.
The Javelinas (20-10, 14-8) started the game on an 11-5 run over the first 7:29 of the game, but TAMIU (18-12, 11-11) battled back to tie the game at 11-11 with 10:48 left in the half.
Texas A&M Kingsville caught fire again and went on a 16-7 over the next 5:24 to take a 27-18 lead, but the Dustdevils responded once again ending the half on a 15-2 run to take a 33-30 lead into the break.
TAMIU continued to roll out of the break, going on a 19-10 run over the first 7:17 to extend its lead to 52-41.
The Dustdevils held a 55-48 lead with 9:03 left in the game when the Javelinas started to close the gap. And with 1:23 left in the game, Texas A&M Kingsville tied the game at 63-63.
Senior
Jermaine Drewey drove the lane with 20 seconds left and earned a trip to the free-throw line for his effort where he converted one of two to give the Dustdevils a 64-63 lead.
The Javelinas drove right back down the court and earned two free throws, converting one of two to tie the game with eight seconds left.
With one final opportunity, graduate student
Greg Bowie II drove for a basket and was fouled with 0.5 seconds left where he sank the first shot and earn the victory in his final collegiate game.
TAMIU shot 20-for-44 (45.5%) from the field and hit 5-for-12 (41.7%) from deep. The Dustdevils also went 20-for-28 (71.4%) from the free-throw line.
On the other hand, Texas A&M Kingsville went 19-for-47 (40.4%) from the field and 4-for-18 (22.2%) from 3. They went 22-for-27 (81.5%) from the charity stripe.
Drewey led TAMIU offensively with 16 points, six rebounds, three assists and one block.
Junior
John Achebe scored 13 points, grabbed eight rebounds, dished out four assists and swiped one steal. Bowie II scored 12 points and junior
Tyrese Davis tallied 11.
The Dustdevils finished in ninth place in the Lone Star Conference, one spot shy of the conference tournament.
